Although these data still represent the “best available” gridded depictions of bathymetry in some locations, they are primarily based on antiquated historical data and do not include many modern survey data, in particular, high resolution BAG format hydrographic data. Early 20th-century NOS soundings are limited by sparseness of soundings, and potentially large positional accuracy of pre-satellite (i.e., GPS) navigation - several meters. Vertical Positional Accuracy Report The vertical accuracy of bathymetric features in the DEM is dependent upon DEM cell size and the accuracy of the input datasets used to determine corresponding cell values. Gridding interpolation to determine cell values between sparse soundings degrades the vertical accuracy of corresponding elevations. Datasets were visually compared with ArcGIS for identification of anomalous elevations or data inconsistencies along with cell registration. The original DEM footprint shapefile was edited and converted to a raster with elevation value set to zero and used as a mask to clip out a subset of the source DEMs for the final gridded bathymetry data product.
