Vegetation damage and recovery after Chiginagak Volcano Crater drainage event

Metadata Updated: May 12, 2018

From August 20 — 23, 2006, I revisited Chiginigak volcano to document vegetation recovery after the crater drainage event that severely damaged vegetation in May of 2005. We had better weather than in 2005 and visited 10 of 11 sites visited in 2005, plus seven new sites, including four that were higher on the mountain than we had been able to land in 2005. Detailed site descriptions are in my report from our August 2005 visit to the area. Maps are in figures 1 and 2 and photographs are in three separate files. When we visited in August 2005, most plants in the affected areas had dead attached leaves and had put out small new leaves during that first summer after the event. The plants had almost 16 months to recover from the event before our August 2006 visit. There were still large areas of severely damaged vegetation in 2006 because the two most common plant species in the area, Sitka alder and crowberry, were dead or leafless in many areas. Most other plant species had recovered partially or fully.
