The global hunger and food security initiative aims to gives families and communities in some of the world’s poorest countries the freedom and opportunity to lift themselves out of food insecurity and malnutrition. The objectives of this study included: 1) Characterize weed seedbank density and composition in EIGP; 2) Evaluate potential effects of zero tillage in wheat on weed seedbank communities; 3) Assess potential relationships between crop diversification and the prevalence of important weeds; and 4) Evaluate potential relationships between soil physical and chemical characteristics and weed communities

This project compiled germinable seedbank counts from 84 farmers’ fields in Bihar and Eastern Uttar Pradesh, India. Soil samples were submitted for soil texture and chemical analyses. Seedbank soil samples were collected from pairs of neighboring fields with similar soils and microclimates but differing in historic tillage (conventional tillage [CT] versus zero tillage [ZT]) and crop rotation practices (rice­wheat versus rice­maize/potato­rice­wheat).
