Saving Lives at Birth Democratic Republic of the Congo NeoBeat Study 2017

Metadata Updated: November 14, 2024

NeoBeat is a low-cost, battery-operated newborn HR monitor designed by Laerdal Global Health (LGH) that detects HR accurately, quickly (<5 seconds), is reusable, and can be easily disinfected using locally-available methods. A single provider can apply NeoBeat in 2-3 seconds and use it to identify a heart rate (HR) after birth in a non-breathing newborn and guide further management, including bag-mask ventilation. Its HR measurement accuracy level is short term average ±10% or ±5 bpm, whichever is greater. This device could be used to incorporate HR throughout the Helping Babies Breath (HBB) algorithm to improve newborn resuscitation in LMICs, but it had not yet been tested in this application.

In this study, we evaluated the change in total stillbirths comparing care prior to HBB training (Epoch 1) to implementation of HBB with NeoBeat (Epoch 2) and HR-guided HBB (Epoch 3). Additionally, we evaluated the change in effective breathing at three minutes comparing HBB with NeoBeat to HR-guided HBB.
