Public Data File 94-39, Progress report on the geology and mineral resources of the Nome mining district, Alaska, presents 1:63,360-scale reconnaissance bedrock and surficial geologic mapping of about 1,900 square kilometers (590 square miles) in the Nome mining district of western Alaska. The Nome mining district is an area of intensely metamorphosed schists. Four types of metallic mineral resources were identified in the study area: (1) gold-polymetallic- quartz-carbonate veins cutting pelitic and mafic schists and carbonates believed to have formed as a result of regional metamorphism; (2) stratiform, massive sulfide-barite deposits associated with felsic metavolcanic schist and metafelsite centers; (3) massive sulfide-iron deposits hosted in carbonate-dominated terranes and of uncertain origin; and (4) heavy mineral placer deposits that have accounted for almost all of the metallic mineral production in the study area. The dataset contains geologic, structural, stratigraphic, and geochronologic data organized according to the GeMS and AK GeMS mapping schemas.
