Population size of horses in five Herd Areas in Nevada, 2022 to 2025
This dataset includes population sizes of free-roaming horses (Equus caballus) in Nevada, USA, within specific Herd Areas (HAs), which are Bureau of Land Management (BLM) management units. The management units in this dataset include the following HAs: Applewhite, Delamar Mountains, Meadow Valley Mountains, Clover Mountains and Clover Creek. Data were collected via aerial helicopter surveys following methods in Griffin et al. (2020; https://doi.org/10.3133/tm2A16) for collecting data in the helicopter and for statistical analyses. All aerial surveys were flown between 2022 and 2025, during the months of February or April only. These 5 HAs make up the study area of a mountain lion predation study, in which we needed the estimate of total horses in the area.
