In Nigeria, the Sustaining Health Outcomes through the Private Sector (SHOPS Plus) project sought to increase correct use of oral rehydration salts (ORS) and zinc to treat uncomplicated diarrhea in children under 5 in Benue and Kebbi States in Nigeria. One of SHOPS Plus' strategies was to work with local manufacturers to increase the supply of ORS and zinc as well as to train and detail retailers, including community pharmacies (CPs) and proprietary patent medicine vendors (PPMVs). In order to monitor the availability of ORS and zinc and the effectiveness of its interventions to increase the supply of ORS and zinc, SHOPS Plus conducted quarterly retail audits in PPMVs and CPs in Benue and Kebbi States from October 2015 to July 2017, when SHOPS Plus ORS-zinc work in Nigeria concluded. SHOPS Plus used this data to inform the management of its ORS and zinc-related activities.
Though the retail audits focused on ORS and zinc availability, SHOPS Plus also monitored availability of other products related to child health in order to inform its activities. The retail audits include antibiotics for treatment of pneumonia in children. In addition, in the July 2017 retail audit, SHOPS Plus included questions on availability of anti-diarrheal/anti-motility drugs as these are often used as incorrect diarrhea treatments for children under 5.
