Movements and habitat use by moose calf-cow pairs

Metadata Updated: January 29, 2020

Concern about high hunting pressure and possibly declining moose density in the Nowitna River drainage caused the u.s. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the Alaska Dept. of Fish and Game (ADFG) to better define the population characteristics of moose on the Nowitna NWR. Aerial surveys since 1980 showed a decline in bull:cow ratios. Moose densities in the Lower Nowitna River and Sulatna River drainages were estimated from censuses to be 0.30 moose/km2 (1980), 0.17 moose/km2 (1986), and 0.27 moose/km2 (1990). Ninety neonatal moose calves were fitted with radio transmitters during calving in May 1988 and 1989 and monitored through 1990 as part of a moose mortality study. Relocation data were analyzed to determine population identity, movement patterns, and seasonal and annual ranges of Nowitna River drainage calf-cow pairs. Estimated home ranges of 37 calves classified as residents averaged 86 km2 as compared to estimated home ranges averaging 31 km2 for resident calves and 197 km2 for migratory calves in the Three Day Slough area. Movements of calves accompanied by cows were used to delineate a population use area. Moose use of habitat above the ·floodplain did not require large movements. Only 2 (5%) of 39 calves that lived ~45 days were considered migratory. Thirty (77%) of these calves, however, were relocated above the floodplain at least once during the summer season. Fourteen (50%) of 28 calves that lived ~160 days also used habitat above the floodplain during the winter season. Percentages of total locations above floodplains were low for both summer 22% (n=637) and winter 20% (n=177) seasons. Eighteen (82%)of 22 calf-cow pairs present within 1.6 km of navigable waters during the September hunting season were also present during November census periods. We speculate that Nowitna River drainage bull moose may have similar movement patterns, but believe that a movement study using radio-colla·red bulls should be done to insure that the population that is harvested in September is adequately enumerated.
