Groundwater Capture Zones

Metadata Updated: July 19, 2013

Source water protection areas are delineated for each groundwater-based public water supply system using available geologic and hydrogeologic information to determine area that the water is derived from. Time-of-travel based capture zones are derived where adequate well data is available. Topographically derived capture zones are used in a few instances. Arbitrary fixed radii are used for karst-impacted systems and for systems with inadequate well and geologic data. Susceptibility to contamination from surface sources is determined based on the thickness of confining material above the aquifer.
