Gridded Mean Monthly Temperature and Precipitation Data for Alaska, British Columbia, and Yukon

Metadata Updated: September 19, 2023

To aid in better understanding the temperature and precipitation data of the spatially variable climate of Alaska and Northwest Canada, this dataset was created via statistical downscaling methods so that hydrologists and other users would have access to gridded estimates (two km resolution) of cumulative precipitation and mean temperature for every month between 1961 and 2009 in Alaska, Yukon Territory, and British Columbia.

Lineage Grids were created by resampling PRISM monthly precipitation norms between 1971-2000 (for Alaska) and 1961-1990 (for British Columbia and Yukon) from a resolution of 771 m to a resolution of 2 km. The resampled climatic norm grids were then merged for each calendar month. Proportional anomalies, or the ratio between measured monthly precipitation and the PRISM monthly norm at that location, were calculated for precipitation for each month between 1/1961 and 12/2009 at the locations of Alaskan and Canadian weather which reported at least 36 months of data within the period. Absolute anomalies, or the difference between measured monthly precipitation and the PRISM monthly norm at that location, were calculated for temperature. Anomalies were interpolated over the entire grid extent using a splines with tension approach (tension = 0.8). Gridded monthly anomalies were then multiplied by or added to the PRISM norm (for precipitation and temperature respectively) to yield a 2 km gridded estimate of total monthly precipitation and temperature in the region for all months between 1/1961 and 12/2009.
