Estimates of marine bird and sea otter abundance in southeast Alaska during summer 1994

Metadata Updated: January 29, 2020

We conducted a survey of marine birds and sea otters (Enhydra lutris) in Southeast Alaska during 9 June-27 July 1994. We used small boats to survey 631 transects randomly-placed throughout the study area and recorded 60 bird and 7 marine mammal species. We estimated the overall summer population of marine birds (± 95% Cl) as 1 ,924,662 + 568,894 individuals. We estimated that 298,493 + 69,065 and 1 ,626,169 + 564,686 marine birds were in the shoreline Gs_0.1 nautical miles (nm) from shore) and offshore (>0.1 nm from shore) strata, respectively. Estimated densities were 54.3 birds/km2 for the entire study area, 63.6 birds/km2 for the shoreline stratum, and 52.8 birds/km2 for the offshore stratum. During summer 1994, the most common species group was alcids (Family Alcidae, 58.5%). Of these, 61% were marbled and Kittlitz's murrelets (Brachyramphus marmoratus and B. brevirostris). The second most common species group was waterfowl (Family Anatidae, 16.1 %) of which 81.5% were seaters (Melanitta spp.). Distribution patterns of marine birds varied by species throughout Southeast Alaska during summer 1994. Large numbers of species, such as rhinoceros auklets ( (Jerorhina monocerata) and murres ( Uria spp.), that breed on the Forrester Island complex and on St. Lazaria Island were found in the southwestern part of the study area, near Prince of Wales Island. We estimated that 8,180 + 6,286 sea otters were in Southeast Alaska during summer 1994. Of these, 4,671 + 5,706 and 3,508 + 2,638 sea otters were estimated to be in the shoreline and offshore strata, respectively. Most otters were observed near sites where they were re-introduced between 1965-69. We recorded 6 other species of marine mammals, including harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena), Pacific white-sided dolphin (Lagenorhynchus obliquidens), Dall's porpoise (Phocoenoides da/11), humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae), Steller sea lion (Eumetopias jubatus), and harbor seal (Phoca vitulina).
