Eastward and northward components of ocean current and water temperature collected from moorings in the vicinity of Quinault Canyon in the North East Pacific Coast from 1979-04-28 to 1979-08-28 (NCEI Accession 0163893)

Metadata Updated: April 1, 2025

The University of Washington deployed 9 current meter moorings in the vicinity of Quinault Canyon. Of those 9 moorings, 6 moorings were recovered with useful data: QC1, QC2, QC5, QC7, QC8, and QC10. QC3 was not deployed and QC4 and QC6 were not recovered. One instrument from QC9 was found on the beach at Brandon, OR, July 12 but it leaked and no data was recovered. Current meters used were primarily Aanderaa (AA) meters and 2 Vector Measuring Current Meters (VMCM) instruments. Unfiltered data from the VMCM instruments is not available and therefore not included in this set. The AA data was sampled in 20 minute intervals. Speed and direction were measured and rotated to true North. Data was first edited for spurious values, then speed and direction were independently filtered with a 5 point binomial filter spanning approximately 1.5 hours and resolved into u and v components. Results from this project can be found in: Hickey, B.M. (1989) Patterns and processes of shelf and slope circulation. In: Landry, M.R. and B.M. Hickey (eds.), Coastal Oceanography of Washington and Oregon, pp. 41-115, Elsevier Science, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Data file format is plain text.
