Distribution, growth, and condition of salmonids in the central California Current Ecosystem.

Metadata Updated: February 1, 2017

The Fisheries Ecology Division of NOAA’s SWFSC conducts annual surveys of salmon and their ocean habitat in the coastal waters of northern California and southern Oregon. We use a surface trawl to collect juvenile and subadult salmonids, including several ESA-listed populations of Chinook and coho salmon and steelhead. We also quantify other epipelagic fish and invertebrates that co-occur with salmon, and we measure spatially matched biological and physical oceanographic variables. Invertebrates and non-salmonid fishes captured in the trawl are identified, counted, measured, and returned to the ocean or retained for other stock survey goals. Juvenile salmonids are lethally sampled and transport back to shore for further analysis. Scales, fin clips, otoliths, stomach contents, blood plasma, and implanted tags (if present) are taken from each juvenile. The majority of subadult salmon are released alive after we remove a small piece of fin for genotype analysis and scales for ageing. We also collect and quantify plankton using a variety of fine-mesh nets and water samplers. Oceanographic variables in our survey include echosounder readings, chlorophyll levels, temperature and salinity profiles, dissolved oxygen, and turbidity.
