Composite Technologies for Exploration (CTE)

NASA lacks experience with large scale (8.4m diameter) composite joints and joining of composites has been called the Achilles heel of composite structures, they account for very significant increases in cost and weight. In addition to joints there is also a need for improvements in the analytical capabilities required to predict failure modes in composite structures. NASA needs to mature technology and produce important innovations across the discipline areas of materials, design & analysis, and advanced manufacturing. The goal of this project is to advance composite technologies that provide lightweight structures to support the Evolvable Mars Campaign. It also supports SLS payload adapters and fittings by maturing composite bonded joint technology and analytical tools to enable risk reduction.
