Bathymetry, Point Clouds, and Water Velocity in the Downstream Approach to Peoria Lock, Near Peoria, Illinois, During Testing of an Automated Barge Clearing Deterrent, July–September 2022

Metadata Updated: December 11, 2025

A variety of new technologies are being evaluated to mitigate the spread of invasive carps from the Illinois River to the Great Lakes. In 2022, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and U.S. Geological Survey undertook a field-scale interagency study to determine the efficacy of an Automated Barge Clearing Deterrent (ABCD) in flushing live fish away from commercial barge vessels entering Peoria Lock on the Illinois River. The ABCD is a forced air manifold system that is placed at the channel bed to create a longitudinal array of bubble plumes. In support of this study, the bathymetry (bottom elevation) of the downstream approach to Peoria Lock, near Peoria, Illinois, was surveyed several times in July, August, and September 2022 using a multibeam echosounder mapping system (MBMS) with integrated inertial navigation solution (INS) mounted on a manned survey vessel. These surveys provide high resolution bathymetric data prior to the installation of the ABCD (July 26, 2022), on several days during the testing of the ABCD (August 29, 30, and 31, 2022; September 1, 2, 6, and 12, 2022), and after the testing was complete (September 28, 2022). The MBMS was also used to create a three-dimensional (3D) point cloud that qualitatively shows the shape and extent of the bubble plumes under water while the ABCD was operating (September 12, 2022). Additionally, water velocity data were collected with the ABCD off and while the ABCD was operating using an acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) operated with a differential Global Positioning System (dGPS) antenna from a manned survey vessel (September 12, 2022). This data release contains three child items, the contents of which are listed below: (1) Acoustic point cloud of bubble plumes in the downstream approach to Peoria Lock, near Peoria, Illinois, during testing of an Automated Barge Clearing Deterrent, September 12, 2022: Contains LAS files of the complete point cloud from survey data collected while the ABCD was operating. (2) Bathymetry in the downstream approach to Peoria Lock, near Peoria, Illinois, during testing of an Automated Barge Clearing Deterrent, July-September 2022: For each survey date listed above, includes text files of gridded bathymetric elevation and total propagated uncertainty (TPU) computed from the Combined Uncertainty and Bathymetry Estimator (CUBE) method as well as LAS files of the complete bathymetric point cloud. (3) Water velocity in the downstream approach to Peoria Lock, near Peoria, Illinois, during testing of an Automated Barge Clearing Deterrent, September 12, 2022: Contains text files of ADCP data exported from WinRiverII Version 2.24 in the classic ASCII output format and KML files showing the ship track of each surveyed line.
