Alaska juvenile Steller Sea Lion Telemetry Dataset from the Eastern Aleutian Islands, 2000-2002

Metadata Updated: April 1, 2024

To better understand potential mechanisms underlying continued population declines of Steller sea lions in Alaska, we captured and deployed satellite-linked transmitters on 30 juvenile (ages 5-21 months) Steller sea lions during 2000-2003 to better understand habitat use, movements, and foraging behavior among the among the eastern Aleutian Islands.

Lineage This dataset represents data published in Fadely et al. (2005). During 2000-2002, 30 immature Steller sea lions were captured on haul-out sites in the northern Gulf of Alaska and Aleutian Islands on land or in water. Captures occurred during February-March of each year and during November 2001. Sea lions were physically or chemically restrained and satellite tags were attached to the dorsal pelage near the shoulders using quick-setting epoxy. All sea lions were immature juveniles between 5-21 months old, estimated assuming mid-June birth dates and based on capture date, tooth eruption, and sea lion size. Because of size overlap within this age group some ages may have been incorrectly estimated. Telemetry data files were delivered from Argos/CLS America to the Alaska Ecosystems Program via direct electronic download, email or compact disc, and decoded using Argos/CLS America and All data were obtained through Service Argos, Inc. (Argos 1996) and decoded using SATPAK software or a data analysis program (DAP; Wildlife Computers Inc.), and maintained in Microsoft Access. See Fadely et al. (2005) for lineage details.
