AFSC/RACE/FBEP/Laurel: Substrate preference and delayed settlement in northern rock sole larvae Lepidopsetta polyxystra

Metadata Updated: April 1, 2024

This dataset is from laboratory experiments testing the onset and ontogenetic changes in habitat selection of pre- and post-settling northern rock sole (NRS) larvae, and from field surveys investigating settlement patterns of NRS.

Lineage A series of benthic scrapes at varying depths were conducted in 2010 and 2011 in 2 known nursery areas, Holiday Beach and Pillar Creek Cove, in Chiniak Bay, Kodiak, Alaska. The total number of age-0 yr flatfish collected was recorded for each scrape. Sediment samples were taken with a ponar grab at discrete depths at each site to characterize sediment size and organic content. Adult northern rock sole were collected in Chiniak Bay, Kodiak, AK in 2009 and transported to the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, OR and maintained as broodstock. In 2010 they were artificially spawned and fertilized eggs were maintained in incubation containers. After hatching, yolk-sac larvae were distributed evenly across a series of upwelling tanks. The first laboratory experiment tested the onset and ontogenetic changes in habitat selection of pre- and post-settling larvae. The second laboratory experiment measured the rate of settlement as a function of fish size and habitat type.
