Adding trend data to Depletion-Based Stock Reduction Analysis

A Bayesian model of Depletion-Based Stock Reduction Analysis (DB-SRA), informed by a time series of abundance indexes, was developed, using the Sampling Importance Resampling (SIR) algorithm. Because the data favored values of some parameters in a region of low prior probability, we found it necessary to implement an adaptive variant of SIR that increased the sampling density in regions of high posterior density. An overview of the method was submitted as a technical Report to the Pacific Fishery Management Council’s (PFMC) Scientific and Statistical Committee Groundfish Subcommittee. At the request of the PFMC, a methodological review of the Bayesian model (Extended Depletion-Based Stock Reduction Analysis, or XDB-SRA) was conducted in June 2012. The panel recommended that XDB-SRA be implemented in time for the 2013 stock assessment review panels. Data-moderate assessments for cowcod and three other groundfish stocks were adopted based on the XDB-SRA model in 2013.
